Angle of Repose

Confined to a wheelchair, retired historian Lyman Ward sets out to write his grandparents' remarkable story, chronicling their days spent carving civilization into the surface of America's western frontier. But his research reveals even more about his own life than he's willing to admit. What emerges is an enthralling portrait of four generations in the life of an American family.

Tom Douglass from East Carolina University is our scholar for the evening. Dr Douglass will guide the discussion into Wallace Stegner’s Angle of Repose.

Guide: Tom Douglass, PhD

Tom Douglass, East Carolina University, teaches Contemporary Literature, British and American. He has taught courses on the American Renaissance, American Realism, Cormac McCarthy, American Humor and Satire, Literary Theory, and the Contemporary British fiction. He is the author of A Room Forever: the Life and Work of Breece D'J Pancake and has edited reprints Hubert Skidmore's Hawk's Nest and Davis Grubb's Fools' Parade. He has recently completed a biography of Davis Grubb.  He organizes ECU's Contemporary Writers Series, which has featured campus visits from Colm Toibin, Colum McCann, Philip Levine, Beth Henley, Natasha Trethewey, Sherman Alexie, and Dave Smith. He also serves as the Appalachian Echoes series editor for the University of Tennessee Press.
