How Serious is Making False Distress Calls?

Last Monday, US District Judge Terrence Boyle sentenced Homer Blackburn, 27, of Atlantic Beach, NC, for making false distress calls to the Coast Guard.

How serious is making false distress calls? It is:

  • 18 months in prison serious

  • Over a quarter of a million dollars restitution serious

Blackburn pleaded guilty to making false emergency calls resulting in rescue attempt by the Coast Guard, US Marine Corp, the National Park Service, and Towboat

Last Monday was the 224th anniversary of the US Coast Guard. Instead of participating in the anniversary festivities, Captain Sean Murtagh, Commander Sector North Carolina, attended the sentencing hearing to emphasize how serious false emergency calls are to the Coast Guard.
